Author Paul Madden standing on the Southbank pier in London, the real location that inspired key scenes in his novel The G Club.

I recently received a kind message from a reader who had just finished The G Club. He mentioned how real the locations felt—even though he’s never been to London. That’s one of the best compliments I could hope for.

He asked about the pier featured in the book—the place where some of the most meaningful scenes between Jamie and Teresa unfold. It made me realise it was time to share more about The G Club’s London location and the real-life inspiration behind it.

The Real Pier That Inspired Key Moments in The G Club

Yes, the pier is real. It sits quietly along the busy Southbank in central London. When I lived there, I used to walk past it regularly and always found it striking—a small, weathered structure jutting into the Thames, surrounded by the constant movement of the city.

The Southbank is typically lively: filled with runners, tourists, performers, and noise. But if you walk out onto the pier, something shifts. The sounds fade. You feel momentarily removed from the chaos, suspended above the water. It offers a rare moment of stillness.

That’s exactly what I needed for Jamie and Teresa in the story—a place of pause and reflection, where they could disconnect from their grief, even just for a moment. This overlooked corner of the city felt perfect.

If you ever find yourself in London, I highly recommend a walk down the Southbank. And if you're curious about the real-life setting behind those scenes, here’s The G Club London location on Google Maps.

Sometimes, fiction brings a place to life. Other times, a place quietly shapes the fiction.
